Roof Restoration Begins!
The tall patterned slate roof and grand towers of the Union Hotel have defined Flemington since it was built in 1877 & 1878. After decades of sporadic repairs and exposure to the elements, the time has come to fully restore the Hotel’s iconic mansard roof. The Second Empire style of the building was very popular and up-to-date when the Hotel was built, but it quickly fell out of fashion. Despite this, the exterior of the Hotel was never modernized, and remains intact but deteriorated today. The Hotel is still the largest building along Main Street, and is the heart of Flemington’s Historic District. This part of the historic restoration will replace the 136 year old slate roof of the fourth floor, replicating the original fish scale patterning. The “UNION HOTEL” lettering will be repainted on the new slate. The woodwork details and brackets of the three towers, the dormer windows and the eaves will be meticulously restored and repainted. The towers will be re-roofed with copper, and the unseen flat roof will be replaced with a modern membrane roof. New windows will closely match the original deteriorated windows. This roof project is the first phase of the revitalization of the Union Hotel, and will help to preserve the rest of the building.
